Sundaze Match Plays (July)

In preparation for the West Virginia Cup, we will be doing Match Play warm ups at Morris Park on Sundays in July. Meet at the main pavilion by hole #1 at 1:00 PM to form teams and we will tee-off by 1:30 PM. For brevity, we will be playing the Seth Burton Memorial Disc Golf Course from the short tees. "Match play" is a competition format in which a round is played with the goal of winning individual holes. Ex. You get a birdie on hole #1 and your opponent gets par, you win the hole. Ties do not *push* - Ex. you and your opponent tie on the first 5 holes, if you win hole 6 it is only worth 1 "W," not 6.

Format: Team 1 vs Team 2. Captains will alternately choose "Pickup Players" from available golfers and label teammates "A", "B", "C" ... etc. These players will compete against all similar players from the other team ("A" from Team 1 plays "A" from Team 2.) The format will be 2 rounds of 9-hole match play - totaling 18 holes.

A player will earn 1 point for a Win, 1/2 point for a Tie and 0 points for a loss for their team. We will play 2 rounds of 9 hole match play and add up the total points for each team after both rounds are completed. Note: If you win 5 holes you automatically have won the round. Don't Stop Playing! Continue the round as each "W" earned could be used in a tie-breaker situation later even if you lose the current match.

No entry fee necessary. Ace Pot and CTP contests $1 each. Most Fun Wins!

The West Virginia Cup is a PDGA-XC-Tier Team Match play tournament on August 3rd - 4th at Morris Park in Fairmont, WV. more info at www.wvdiscgolf.org

Interesting Facts on Match Play:

  • 1 Player vs Another, not the field
  • Players win holes, who wins the most holes wins the match
  • Can be played 1 on 1 (Match Play Singles)
  • *Dormie hole - when one golfer achieves a lead that matches the number of holes remaining (Ex. 3 holes up with 3 holes to play)
  • *The trailing golfer cannot win once the match goes dormie, they can only tie by winning all remaining holes.
