2013 West Virginia Cup

The Format:

Format is Team Based 9-hole match play. Teams of 6 must include; 2 Pro’s (P1 & P2), 2 Am’s (Am1 & Am2), 1 Master and 1 Woman (or Am Grandmaster.) Match Play is a competition format in which a round is played with the goal of winning individual holes. Ex; Player 1 birdies a hole and player 2 makes par. Player 1 wins the hole. Players earn 1 point for a Win, ½ point for a Tie and no points for a Loss. Ties do not push to the next hole. Continue playing even if you cannot win the match because individual holes won are also recorded and will be used for tie-breakers.

Round 1 (Seth Burton Memorial Disc Golf course) will complete when like players from all teams have played each other. Round 2 Finals (Sunday at noon) will be the top 2 teams from Round 1 playing for Gold & Silver, the third and fourth place teams from Round 1 play for Bronze and Runner-Up. The Finals will be one set of 9-hole match play on Orange Crush between teams.

Because of physical time restraints, if we have more than 10 teams we will be forced into a pool play format with seating. Seating will be based randomly. In the future, WV Cup seating will be determined by previous WV Cup results.

Saturday:

The participants from each team will break off into their specified divisions and then into groups for the matches (Pro#1 from Team A” vs Pro#1 from Team “B”, Pro#1 from Team “C” plays Pro#1 from Team “D” … etc.) We will try and keep the groups to foursomes, but they can be as large as six participants depending on number of teams. Round 1 will conclude when all teams have played each other. A “Rolling Lunch” will be served so that the groups can stop by tourney HQ and eat then, continue play.

In the event that there is an odd number of teams registered, players will be rotated in/out of groups until all matches are completed. Matches unfinished on Saturday will be played Sunday morning.

Sunday:

Unfinished matches from Round 1 will be completed Sunday morning. Total points for all competing teams will be tallied and used to determine the Gold/Silver, Bronze/Runner-Up teams for the Round 2 Final 9. Round 2 Tee-Off (and lunch) will be close to 12:00 PM as possible.

Tournament Point System

The point system is tallied based on the results of each match played. One point is at stake in each match. The player with the most holes won is the winner of the match, and earns 1 point for his/her team. Ties in the match earn both players' teams 1/2 point.

An accumulated match points system is used.  The points accrued by teams in the preliminary round are used to set the seeding for the championship round. The top four most points earning teams will play in the Round 2 Finals. If there is a tiebreaker needed for seeding, the tiebreaker will be awarded to the team that has the best head-to-head result. If still unbroken, we will use the team that has the most number of holes won during their Round 1 matches.

During the championship match the slate is wiped clean, previously earned points do not carry over. If there is a tie at the end of a championship match, the tiebreaker is awarded to the team with the most holes won in the final. If still unbroken, we will use most holes won overall (Round 1 & Round 2.)

Substitution Rule/Criteria:

This substitution rule is to "replace an injured player only", NOT to replace someone who is simply tired, fatigued or burned out. A substitute player may replace a team player only if the team player cannot continue play because of an incapacitating injury. The TD will make the final decision on substitutions.

Qualifications for substitute player:

The substitute player must be designated before the tournament competition begins and must meet the qualification criteria of the roster member for whom they are subbing. (ie: woman, true amateur ..etc.)

For example; should you bring along an extra Pro as a sub and one of your Ams gets injured … the Pro is not eligible to play the spot. However, an Am could play the Open spot. Choose wisely if you plan on bringing a substitute. Need a sub that can play in any division? She will be an Am 40 or older.

Once the TD has made his decision, only 3 minutes will be allowed for the sub to replace the injured player and resume play in the normal rotation of shots. Any holes missed during the exchange of the injured and alternate player will be forfeited.
